The blessings of diversity

From the New York Times, a run of the mill case of arranged marriage, visa fraud, and honor killings:
Court Documents Detail a Deadly Family Feud From Brooklyn to Pakistan
By MOSI SECRET
She fled her husband and her family, sneaking out of her home in Pakistan to take sanctuary in the American Embassy, which then whisked her to a secret hide-out in the United States.
The thrilling escape seemed to end the harrowing ordeal of Amina Ajmal, an American citizen who said she had been held captive for years by her own relatives in Pakistan and forced to marry a man there who only wanted an American visa. But then, after law enforcement encouraged her to call her father from her hide-out, the episode took an even darker turn.
“I will not end this until I find you,” Mohammad Ajmal Choudhry, a Brooklyn taxi driver, told his daughter on the phone in February, according to a transcript of the recorded call. “I will kill their entire family.”
Four days later, two people in Pakistan were dead. Relatives of the man who had helped her escape, they were gunned down while riding a motorcycle through the streets of Gujrat.
And now the tale of the Choudhry family, detailed in hundreds of pages of court documents, is a feud of Shakespearean proportions, sprawling across the two continents and the shifting cultures that these immigrants and their American children inhabit.
Nearly two dozen people, including his other children, came to support Mr. Choudhry at his most recent bail hearing, in April. Despite his prison clothes, he looked every bit the jovial grandfather, plump, balding and waving warmly to the crowd before affirming his innocence. For now, the charges in Federal District Court in Brooklyn are for making threats and visa fraud for filing a visa application for Ms. Ajmal’s new husband without her permission. There is a warrant for Mr. Choudhry’s arrest in Pakistan, accusing him of murder.
Ms. Ajmal’s ordeal began three years ago, when, at age 19 and having spent her whole life in Brooklyn, she moved to Gujrat, her ancestral city in northeast Pakistan. Her new home was much like the one she left, filled with relatives from several generations who regularly traveled back and forth between the two countries. Some had helped to raise her after her mother died.
But Ms. Ajmal recently told federal investigators that for three years she was held as a prisoner in her own home. Her confinement was only made worse when her father forced her to marry a local man, Abrar Ahmed Babar, under the threat of death, she said.
Then, with the help of a distant relative, Shujat Abbas, she fled.
When she arrived in the United States in January, she called Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeking help. She told officials that her marriage had been arranged so that her husband could obtain legal permanent residency in the United States. Investigators said they later found a visa application for Mr. Babar that had been mailed from Brooklyn, bearing Ms. Ajmal’s signature, even though she was out of the country when it was mailed.
When Ms. Ajmal called her father in February, he lashed out with pleas and threats, most of them directed toward the family of Mr. Abbas, according to a transcript of the secretly recorded calls that was filed in court. “I will catch each and every person of their family, and will kill them, until I find you,” Mr. Choudhry said.
That same day Mr. Choudhry e-mailed the American Embassy in Islamabad, saying Mr. Abbas was a drug smuggler who was wanted by the government of Dubai. He wrote that Mr. Abbas was using his relationship with his daughter to try to gain citizenship.
He is trying his level best to come to U.S.A. by hook and by crook,” Mr. Choudhry wrote, according to court documents. Mr. Choudhry’s lawyer, Joshua L. Dratel, provided the e-mails to the court in an attempt to show that Mr. Abbas “is not some good Samaritan interested in Amina’s welfare.”
Mr. Abbas’s father and sister were killed four days later. Mr. Abbas’s mother filed a complaint in Pakistan alleging that the assailants were Ms. Ajmal’s aggrieved husband and her father’s brother, who she said were also responsible for “desecrating the bodies.” She named several other relatives of Mr. Choudhry who she said were involved.
In a recorded phone call after the murders, Mr. Choudhry repeatedly denied that he ordered the killings, saying that other enemies of Mr. Abbas’s family must be to blame. But he did not back down from his threats.
“Even if I did kill him, isn’t a person supposed to kill that being, when he finds out that his daughter ran away because of him?” he said, according to court papers. “My name is tainted everywhere in newspapers, on TV channels, that I am a man with no honor, my daughters are whores.”
A legal resident since 1990, Mr. Choudhry, 60, was arrested on Feb. 26 outside his home in Brooklyn. Prosecutors charged him with visa fraud and communicating threats and they continue to investigate his involvement in the murders. He faces up to 20 years in prison on the two pending charges.
His lawyer, Mr. Dratel, filed more than a dozen sworn affidavits from people in Pakistan attesting to Mr. Choudhry’s character, providing alibis for the two accused of being the gunmen and presenting alternative theories for how the killings could have happened. He argued that Mr. Choudhry should be released on bail because he was not charged with murder.
As evidence that Ms. Ajmal was never held against her will, he included a photograph of her at her wedding, a lavish affair with more than 1,000 guests, showing her smiling in an ornate gown, with her arms outstretched, admiring her jewelry.

Steve, I'm glad you are broadening your writing to include fiction, this HBD and culture blogging is just not cutting it. Also, what kind of name is Mosi Secret, maybe you can convince those hispanic house wives to start reading with a name like Senior Chupacabra. Next time, to make the story a little more believable, include a few more Mohammads, Abduls, and some goats.

What's wrong with you, Mr. Sailer? Can you not appreciate that our Dear Rulers' imposition upon us of Importation of the Third World enriches us and our decadent, moribund Western culture, and that the vast numbers of STEM-gifted Third World immigrants boost our economy? So what if these "new Americans'" customs are a trifle odd - can't we all just get along?

Why there are Parsis who can't get visas when tribal Chechens can is beyond me.

South Asia's already built a huge social structure around delineating the quality of people, and hence immigrants. It's called the caste system.

It may not be perfect, but it's pretty damn good about predicting who's more desirable. Shouldn't western immigration policy at least be considering caste information in the approval process.

Augustine, you are right, your wisdom shines brightly and far exceeds anyone here. In fact, I propose that you should immigrate to Pakistan or some other third world Crapistan. There you will instruct the violent and illiterate natives in the "psychological/confirmation bias" expertise you possess. Hopefully, they will realize how crappy they are and won'd have to "confirm their biases" by immigrating to the west and having to live next to me.

You are our only hope Augustine.

Uncle Joe praised Jewish control of the media on Tuesday. Really, he did:

"“I believe what affects the movements in America, what affects our attitudes in America are as much the culture and the arts as anything else,” he said at a Democratic National Committee reception for Jewish American Heritage Month. He cited social media and the sitcom “Will and Grace,” giving Jews a large part of the credit for both.

“I bet you 85 percent of those changes, whether it’s in Hollywood or social media are a consequence of Jewish leaders in the industry,” he said. “The influence is immense, the influence is immense. And, I might add, it is all to the good."

Very peaceful places, these, and lovely too. Lest you think any place outside the West is 'violent, illiterate', all the data is against you. Watch some non-biased news once in a while. Also, I'm not sure you understand how confirmation bias works. How are immigrants subscribing to a confirmation bias by moving here? This enquiring mind would love to know. :). Oh, gated community? Hm. I don't know - I'm a graduate student in nanotechnology surrounded by immigrants, who are very hard-working and pushing the boundaries of knowledge. Does that count?

Relevant data on Ghana:
Literacy Rate:71.5% (via CIA FACTBOOK)
Homicide Rate: 15.7 per 100,000 (via WIKIPEDIA)

MMMM, a 15.7 does not sound "peaceful" to me, though I suppose it all depends on your point of comparison.Compared to, say, Congo (30.8) Ghana seems quite peaceful. Compared to the USA (4.8) it looks like a violent, quasi-literate hellhole..

India:

Literacy rate:74.04 (CIA FACTBOOK0
Homicide rate:3.5 (WIKIPEDIA)

Always a shock to see how high the illiteracy rate is in India..but, on the other hand, the Indians do have Ghana beat in terms of homicide rates...

Two points - (1) the rest of America already looks exclusively at the pluses of immigration, so for Steve to chime in would be redundant, and (2) immigration is mainly good for the NAABP, rather than for ordinary people, in the sense that your inviting a homeless person into your home would be good for people who won't have to step over him to get to their destinations, but probably a net negative for your family.

It's rather curious that in replying to my bit about non-violence, you left out Hong Kong, no? Very curious. Another point, one cannot simply point to homicide rates without looking at population densities. I hope this is self-explanatory. Further, I assume you understand that homicide rates are averaged over the population. I tell you I'd rather live in Tema (where I lived in Ghana) than in Trenton, New Jersey. Or in Bangalore than in Philadelphia. Get the point. We can play this game forever. The pertinent point, however, is this: How much of crime in the US is committed by immigrants? Gimme a good guess, and then check your math.

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your point of view, having an immigrant over is nothing like having an immigrant over. Look up the numbers - most immigrants are NOT on welfare. Most immigrants contribute to the economy through the same means that regular Americans do - selling, buying, etc etc. Believe it or not, immigration creates jobs at home as well.

To those who think foreign grad students/innovation can simply be replaced by Americans, please look up the numbers and see how the US schooling system is failing locals (also read Charles Murray's 'Coming Apart' to see how America just aint what it used to be in striving for the best for self and for nation -- maybe when we these cultural deprivations are solved, we can kick out the immigrants and be self-satisfied.

Man, your list of terrorist groups in India, or whatever that is, is all mirrors and smoke. Deal with the actual homicide rate. I assume you also know that homicide rate is averaged out over the population, and that higher population densities will tend to have higher homicidal rates. Also, the US is very much in the middle of the pack in terms of homicide rates. Put those together - they shouldn't make you as high and haughty as you currently are.

That doesn't sound right at all. When all other factors are held constant, higher population densities correlate with lower per capita crime rates, homicide or whatever. Police coverage is simply easier for higher population densities.

Augustine the black:"It's rather curious that in replying to my bit about non-violence, you left out Hong Kong, no? Very curious."

Not curious at all. The Chinese are a civilized, law-abiding race.Hence, no one complains about having Chinese immigrate. I would be a happy man if every Black African immigrant to the USA were replaced by a Chinese.

Augustine Black:" Another point, one cannot simply point to homicide rates without looking at population densities. I hope this is self-explanatory."

Of course, dear boy....So let's look at some population density data:

Japan: Pop. Density: 337 people per km squared (via WIKIPEDIA)
Homicide rate:0.4

The Netherlands: pop.density: 497 per km squared (via WIKIPEDIA)
Homicide rate:1.1 (via WIKIPEDIA)

Ghana:pop. density:103 per km squared. (via WIKIPEDIA)
homicide rate: 15.7

Gosh, population density does not seem to be much of a factor, does it. Somehow, the massively crowded Japanese and Dutch seem to refrain from killing each other...

Auhstineblack:" Further, I assume you understand that homicide rates are averaged over the population. I tell you I'd rather live in Tema (where I lived in Ghana) than in Trenton, New Jersey. Or in Bangalore than in Philadelphia. Get the point."

Yes, dear boy, I am well acquainted with the concept of population averages, as evidenced by my reference to homicide rates per 100,000...

As for your, ahem, preference for living in certain urban environments in the Third World, what does that have to do with anything? One can find relatively prosperous and comparatively safe zones in the most hellish Third world cesspit..

Augustine black:" We can play this game forever. The pertinent point, however, is this: How much of crime in the US is committed by immigrants? Gimme a good guess, and then check your math."

MMM, The USA's homicide rate is 4.8, which is on the high end for a Western country (Canada is 1.6, UK is 1.2, etc). However, the rate in the USA is inflated by the massive number of non-Whites.So, lets look at just the White rate. "Dirty medicine: The epic inside story of long-term criminal fraud at Ranbaxy, the Indian drug company that makes generic Lipitor for millions of Americans"
, Katherine Eban, Fortune, May 15, 2013.

"... Kumar had a PowerPoint presentation of 24 slides. It made clear that Ranbaxy had lied to regulators and falsified data in every country examined in the report. "More than 200 products in more than 40 countries" have "elements of data that were fabricated to support business needs," the PowerPoint reported. "Business needs," the report showed, was a euphemism for ways in which Ranbaxy could minimize cost, maximize profit, and dupe regulators into approving substandard drugs. ...

.. they stumbled onto Ranbaxy's open secret: The company manipulated almost every aspect of its manufacturing process to quickly produce impressive-looking data that would bolster its bottom line. "This was not something that was concealed," Thakur says. It was "common knowledge ...

...

Lying to regulators and backdating and forgery were commonplace, he says. The company even forged its own standard operating procedures, which FDA inspectors rely on to assess whether a company is following its own policies. Thakur's team was told of one instance in which company officials forged and backdated a standard operating procedure related to how patient data are stored, then aged the document in a "steam room" overnight to fool regulators.

Company scientists told Thakur's staff that they were directed to substitute cheaper, lower-quality ingredients in place of better ingredients, to manipulate test parameters to accommodate higher impurities, and even to substitute brand-name drugs in lieu of their own generics in bioequivalence tests to produce better results.

...

No market or type of drug was exempt, including antiretrovirals purchased by the U.S. and WHO as part of a program to fight HIV in Africa. In Europe, for example, the company used ingredients from unapproved sources, invented shelf-life data, tested different formulations of the drug than the ones it sold, and made undocumented changes to the manufacturing process."

I once listened to Jim Gray having an extended one-on-one conversation with a young Indian grad student in the US, a woman. I stood by and occasionally nodded and "uhuhed". He was trying to answer her question, "Why are things so much better in the US?" Jim essentially talked a lot about corruption in India and how many problems he had seen due to corruption in India while working for Microsoft. She didn't disagree with the corruption thesis, but I could tell she didn't believe it was the whole story either.

, By Patrick Thibodeau, May 16, 2013.

I particularly appreciate this bit of wisdom:

"Matthew Kazmierczak, a senior vice president at TechAmerica, said if there is lots of hiring in an industry and the pay for new hires is below average, the average wage could go down."

There's also this:

"Also, the option of turning to outsourcing creates less pressure to increase wages."

Yup, verily, it takes years of education to understand these complex situations...

Ah, Indian diversity and moral uplift. I can see this is going to be good for the Ol'USA...

"... the drugs weren't good. They had high impurities, degraded easily, and would be useless at best in hot, humid conditions. They would be taken by the world's poorest patients in sub-Saharan Africa, who had almost no medical infrastructure and no recourse for complaints. ...

Ranbaxy executives didn't care, says Kathy Spreen, and made little effort to conceal it. In a conference call with a dozen company executives, one brushed aside her fears about the quality of the AIDS medicine Ranbaxy was supplying for Africa. "Who cares?" he said, according to Spreen. "It's just blacks dying.""

Spreen was one of Ranbaxy's US managers.

"Six other pharma veterans who worked for Ranbaxy in the U.S. as recently as 2010 tell Fortune they found themselves in a corporate culture like nothing they'd ever experienced. Executives approached the regulatory system as an obstacle to be gamed. They bragged about who had most artfully deceived regulators. Until 2005 the company didn't even have a functioning patient-safety department, and patient complaints piled up in boxes, ignored, uncategorized, and unreported to the FDA as required."

Lovely. Is there a name for the "anti Boy Scout" credo? Or do only gullible fly-over-country white folks get an anachronism like that?
